St Patrick’s Day is fast approaching and Photo Booth of the Stars is “lucky” to service many festive Irish themed celebrations. This made us think? What is the real meaning of this shamrock themed holiday? We did the research here’s what we learned.
St Patrick lived during the fifth century and is currently the patron saint and national model of Ireland. Born in Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at 16 years old. He later escaped and returned to Ireland. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. Perhaps the most well known legend is that he explained the Holy Trinity using the three leaves of a native Irish clover “the shamrock.”
St Patrick’s Day has it’s Chicago roots as well. One of Chicago’s annual St Pat’s traditions is the dyeing of the Chicago River green. This started in 1962, when the city pollution-control workers used dyes to trace illegal sewage discharges and realized that the green dye might be an amazing way to celebrate the holiday. That year, they released 100 pounds of green vegetable dye into the Chicago river! This kept the Chicago river green for a week! Today only 40 pounds of dye are used, and the river turns green for only several hours.
